What About Zelle?

At The Southern Credit Union, we strive to keep our members informed about changes in the financial tools you may use daily. Over the next few months, the standalone Zelle app is being phased out, and there are key changes that will affect how users send and receive money through the platform.

Here’s what you need to know:

What's Happening with the Zelle App?

Significant changes began in January 2025 when new users could no longer enroll in the Zelle mobile app. Existing users will lose the ability to send or receive money using the app after March 31, 2025. While Zelle itself is not going away, unfortunately, they will no longer allow our members to utilize their platform.

Does The Southern Credit Union offer Zelle?

No, The Southern Credit Union does not offer Zelle through its mobile app or online banking services.

Why?

Unfortunately, significant amounts of money have been lost through fraud within Zelle and other alternative payment solutions.  Consumers have to be careful and diligent when choosing a solution and deciding to whom and when they are sending money.  With the number of free peer-to-peer (P2P) platforms available out there, The Southern Credit Union has chosen to invest our profits in the communities we serve in more tangible ways.

Alternative Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Payment Platforms

While the stand-alone Zelle app is transitioning away, there are other reliable and secure options to transfer your money easily. We’ve done some research, and here are five top-performing P2P payment platforms with a closer look at their features and security strengths. Your VISA® debit and/or credit card with The Southern is available to be loaded in both the Apple Pay and Google Pay Digital Wallets.

1. Apple Pay

  • Features: Apple Pay integrates seamlessly across Apple devices, making it easy to send money via iMessage, shop in stores, and make payments in apps or online. It’s convenient for users within the Apple ecosystem.
  • Security: Apple Pay is highly secure, utilizing Face ID or Touch ID, unique transaction codes, and device-specific account numbers. Card details are not stored on your device or Apple servers, keeping them hidden from merchants during transactions.

2. Google Pay

  • Features: With Google Pay, you can transfer money to others, make contactless payments in stores, and manage payment methods in one place. It’s user-friendly and works across most devices.
  • Security: Google Pay encrypts all payment details, offers fraud detection, and allows you to lock or erase your account remotely if your device is lost or stolen.

3. PayPal

  • Features: PayPal lets you send money to friends, split bills, make purchases online, or even pay businesses directly. You can also set up a PayPal balance or link it with your credit/debit cards or bank account for quick payments.
  • Security: PayPal offers Buyer and Seller Protection, 24/7 monitoring for suspicious activity, and two-factor authentication to keep your account safe. For added peace of mind, all transactions are encrypted.

4. Venmo

  • Features: With Venmo, you can send money to friends instantly using their username, phone number, or email. You can also split large purchases like rent or groceries and even customize your transactions with fun emojis.
  • Security: Venmo encrypts user data and offers PIN codes for an added layer of security. You can also enable two-factor authentication to protect your account.

5. CashApp

  • Features: Cash App allows you to send and receive money instantly. With linked debit cards, you can make purchases directly from the app. We recommend setting up a secure pin before transferring money.
  • Security: Security features include account alerts for unauthorized access, multi-factor authentication, and the ability to disable card transactions right from the app. Your transactions are protected using encryption and fraud detection. We highly recommend turning on Cash App’s advanced security features to keep your account protected.

Pro-Tip:

Remember,  transferring funds through a P2P app is exactly like sending cash. Whichever platform you use to transfer money, ALWAYS verify the individual you are sending funds to before confirming the transfer. This extra step helps keep you and your cash safe!
